Embroidery - How To Chain Stitch


How To Chain Stitch

Bring the needle out with the thread at the top and hold down with left thumb. Insert the needle where it last emerged and bring the point out a short distance away. Pull the thread through, keeping the working thread under the needle point.

Chain stitch can be used an outline stitch or worked in close rows as a filling.

Fig 1
Bring the thread through at A, hold the thread down with the thumb and inset the needle through the same hold at A.

Bring the needle out at B and, keeping the thread under the needle point, pull the loop of thread to form a chain.

Hold the thread down with the thumb and insert the needle down through the same hole at B.

As Fig. 2, bringing the needle out at C.

Hold the thread down with the thumb and insert the needle down through the same hole at C. Continue working stitches in the same way.

Finishing the last loop with a small tying stitch.
