Crochet Patterns - Chicken Welcome

Materials: Red Heart Super Saver 4-ply worsted weight yarn, 2-1/2 oz. #316 Soft White, small amount each #0303 Painted Desert, #376 Burgundy, #645 Honey Gold, scrap of Black.
G (4.5mm) hook;
3/4" wooden letters to spell WELCOME;
stiff plastic canvas;
Burgundy acrylic paint;
1" plastic ring for hanger;
Aleene's Designer Tacky Glue;
paintbrush;
tapestry needle;

Gauge: 4 sc = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch.

Pattern: (Make 2):

Row 1: With Soft White, ch 26; sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ea ch across, ch 1, turn. (25).

Rows 2-5: 2 sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (27,29,31,33).

Rows 6-18: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (33).

Row 19: Dec over first 2 sc, sc in ea sc across to last 2 sc, dec over last 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (31).

Row 20: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (31).

Rows 21-26: Repeat Rows 19 and 20 consecutively, ending with 25 sts on Row 26. (29,27,25).

Rows 27-33: Repeat Row 19. (23,21,19,17,15,13).

Rows 34-41: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (13).

Rows 42-45: Repeat Row 19. (11,9,7,5,).

At end of Row 45, ch 1, turn.

Rnd 46: Working in ends of rows and in ea sc, sc around outer edges of chicken side; join with a sl st to first sc.

After Sirst Side, fasten off.

Using first side as a pattern, cut plastic canvas slightly smaller than chicken side.

After Second Side, do NOT fasten off.

Joining: Holding both sides with wrong sides together and matching stitches, working in both Back Loops only around, with plastic canvas sandwiched in between, sl st in each stitch around, joining sides together. Join with a sl st to first sl st and fasten off.

Comb:

Rnd 1: With Burgundy, ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with a sl st to first sc, ch 1, turn. (6).

Rnd 2: 2 sc in ea sc around, join, ch 2, turn. (12).

Rnd 3: (wrong side) (Hdc, sc, 2 hdc) in same place as joining; sl st in next sc, * (2 hdc, sc, 2 hdc) in next sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * around; join with a sl st to top of starting ch-2.

Fasten off, leaving length for sewing. Sew Comb to top of head as shown.

Beak:

Rnd 1: With Gold, ch 2; 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook; join with a sl st to first sc, ch 1, turn. (6).

Rnd 2: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc) around; join, ch 1, turn. (9).

Rnd 3: Sc in ea sc around; join, ch 1, turn. (9).

Rnd 4: (Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) around; join, ch 1, turn. (12).

Rnd 5: Sc in ea sc around; join, ch 1, turn. (12).

Fasten off, leaving length for sewing. Flatten beack and sew to front of chicken side over Rows 37 and 38.

Eyes: Using Black and Satin Stitch, embroider eyes over Rows 42 and 43, 1-1/4" apart.
Heart:

Row 1: With Painted Desert, ch 2; 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn. (3).

Rows 2 & 3: 2 sc in first sc, sc in ea sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, ch 1, turn. (5,7).

Row 4: Sc in ea sc across, ch 1, turn. (7).

Row 5: Repeat Row 2. (9).

Row 6: Repeat Row 4. (9).

Row 7: Repeat Row 2. (11).

Row 8: Repeat Row 4. (11).

Rnd 9: (Sc, hdc) in first sc, 2 dc in next sc (twice), (hdc, sc) in next sc, sl st in next sc, (sc, hdc) in next sc, 2 dc in next sc (twice); (hdc, sc) in last sc, do not turn; ch 1, sc in ends of each row around to opposite end of Rnd 9, working 3 sc in point; sl st in first st of Rnd 9.

Fasten off, leaving length for sewing.

Sew heart to center of chicken front, over Rows 14-24, stuffing with scraps of painted desert yarn, before closing.

Hanger: Using tapestry needle and Soft White, sew 1" plastic ring to top back for hanging.
