Each tulip of the Tulip Wheel is pieced together and then appliquéd on a 16-1/2 inch muslin square. To make this block for the Sampler Quilt, you will need pattern pieces given, two 2 1/2 x 16 1/2 and two 2 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch border strips of light fabric, a 20 1/2 inch square of batting and a 21 inch square of backing. The block is quilted on an adjustable lap frame.
Piecing: Cut pattern pieces as directed on individual pattern pieces. For sides of tulip, be sure to fold material and cut two pieces together so you will have both sides of each tulip. You can also do this by cutting 4 pieces as the pattern is given and flipping the pattern over for the other 4 sides. Sew tulip sides to middle flower section. Add top of stem piece along bottom of flower; then, add stem. If curves are difficult to fit, ease in the best you can. Repeat with other 3 tulips.
Appliquéing: Turn ¼ inch seam and baste along all sides of tulips and press. Baste and press dark fabric center square; pin in center of muslin square. If center square is set at an angle, stems will fit under sides of square. If square is straight, set stems under corners. Tulips should point towards outside corners of block. Pin and appliqué in place. Add 2 1/2 x 16 1/2 inch borders on opposite sides; then, add 2 1/2 x 20 1/2 inch borders.
Assembling: Place muslin on frame and pin corners tightly. Add batting and appliquéd top. Pin through all three layers at corners, middle of opposite sides, then the other tow sides. Continue to pin al the way around, pulling the back slightly to keep the muslin taut.
Quilt 1/4 inch inside seams of center square, 1/4 inch outside each tulip and in the ditch (seam) of dark parts of flower. See diagram below.
As with most blocks, this one can be used as a wall hanging or pillow. Following these directions will give you a square pillow; however, the shape of the Tulip Wheel suggests adapting it to a round pillow. A quilt using only this pattern would be pretty with different fabrics for the tulips. To unify the quilt, keep the borders the same color, and also the center square.
