Baby Knitting Patterns - Dainty Jacket


Sizes: 6 months, 1 and 2. 
Gauge: 8 sts = 1"; 10 rows = 1".
Materials: Red Heart 3-ply, 2 skeins of 2 ounce color of choice for size 6 months and size 1; 3 skeins for size 2; 1 pair No. 2 (2 3/4 mm. size) knitting needles; Crochet hook No. 2.; 1 yard satin ribbon, 1/2 inch wide; 1 1/2 yards satin ribbon, 1/4 inch wide.

Note: Instructions are given for size 6 months with changes for sizes 1 and 2 in parentheses.
Back: Starting at lower edge, cast on 75 (81, 87) sts.
1st row: P 3, * k 3, p 3. Repeat from * across.
2nd row: K 3, * p 3, k 3. Repeat from * across.
3rd row: P 3, * O, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, O, p 3. Repeat from * across.
4th 5th and 6th rows: Repeat 2nd, first and 2nd rows. The last 6 rows constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 6 ( 6 1/2, 7) inches.
Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 63 (69, 75) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 3 ( 3 1/2, 4) inches.
Shape Shoulders: Bind off 20 (22, 24) sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining sts for back of neck.
Left Front: Starting at lower edge, cast on 39 (45, 51) sts. Work in pattern as for back until piece measures, ending at side edge 6 (6 1/2, 7) inches.
To shape armhole: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next row. Dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row until there remain 33 (39, 45) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge 2 ( 2 1/4, 2 1/2) inches.
To shape neck: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next row 10 (12, 16) sts. Dec 1 st at same edge every other row until there remain 20 (22, 24) sts. Work without decreasing until piece measures from first row of armhole shaping 3 (3 1/2, 4) inches, ending at armhole edge. Bind off.
Right Front: Work as for left front, reversing shapings.
Sleeves: Starting at lower edge, cast on 51 (57, 63) sts. Work in pattern as for back until piece measures 6 ( 6 1/2, 7) inches.
To shape top: Bind off 3 sts at the beginning of the next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 25 (29, 33) sts. Dec 1 st at both ends of every row until 15 sts remain. Bind off.
Block. Sew shoulder, side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves.
Edging and Beading:
1st row: With right side facing, attach yarn at lower corner of right front edge, sc closely along right front edge and around neck edge. Ch 3, turn.
2nd row: Skip first sc, tr in next sc, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, tr in each of next 2 sc. Repeat from * across, ending with tr in last 2 sc on neck edge. Ch 2, turn.
3rd row: Sc between the first 2 tr, * 2 sc in next sp, sc between next 2 tr. Repeat from * across, then make sc closely along left front edge. Break off.
Finishing: Press lightly. Draw the 1/2 inch wide ribbon through beading. Cut the 1/4 inch ribbon in half. Draw a piece through 3rd eyelet row on each sleeve and tie in a bow.
