Tatting Patterns - Tatted Buttons


Materials: You will need 1/2 inch pearl buttons with a shank, tatting shuttle, approximately 5 yards number 30 crochet cotton for each button and size 13 steel crochet hook for joining picots.
Abbreviations: r (ring) p (picot) ch (chain) sep (separate) ds (double stitch) rw (reverse work) cl r (close ring) rnd (round)
Button Cover Center: R of (1 ds, small p) 8 times, cl r. Do not cut threads.
Rnd 1: Tie ball thread to shuttle thread, pull thread through last p of r in same manner as joining p, (ch small p, 2 ds, join in next p) 8 times. Do not cut threads.
Rnds 2, 3: (Ch small p. 3 ds, join in next small p) 8 times. Do not cut threads.
Rnd 4: Work in same manner as Rnds 2 and 3. Tie and cut threads.
Place top of button inside tatted circle. Gather at back with needle and thread. Fasten on back close to shank.
Petals: Working from back, join ball and shuttle threads in small p of Rnd 3, ch 6 ds, 3 p sep by 9 ds, 6 ds, join in same small p, ch 2 ds, join in next small p, *ch 6 ds, join in last p of last ch, 9 ds, 2 p sep by 9 ds, 6 ds, join in same small p of Rnd 3, ch 2 ds, join in next small p of Rnd 3. Repeat from * around, last p of last ch must be joined to first p of first ch and last ch 2 ds is joined at base of first ch. Tie and cut threads.
The covered button should stand up above the petals.
