Tatting Patterns- Tatted Butterfly


You will need: Approximately 75 yards number 30 crochet cotton in the color of your choice, a tatting shuttle and size 14 steel crochet hook for joining picots.
Abbreviations: r (ring) p (picot) ch (chain) sep (separate) cl r (close ring)  rw (reverse work) ds (double stitch)
Head: R of 5 ds, 4 p sep by 2 ds, 5 ds, cl r, rw.
Body: Large r of 20 dc, p. 20 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 4 ds, 2 p sep by 12 ds, 4 ds, join in p of last r, rw. R of 12 ds, p, 12 ds, cl r, reverse r. Ch 2 ds, p, 10 ds, join in p of last r, rw. R of 5 ds, long p, 5 ds, cl r (forms tail). Ch 10 ds, p. 2 ds, join between r's. Ch 4 ds, 2 p sep by 12 ds, 4 ds, join between head and body. Tie and cut threads.
Upper Wing: Join in lower p of ch around large r, ch 5 ds, rw. R of 3 ds, p, 3 ds, join in upper p of same ch, 3 ds, p, 3 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 5 ds, rw. R of 4 ds, long p, 4 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 5 ds, join in p of first r of upper wing, 5 ds, 2 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, rw. *R of 4 ds, join in long p of r, 4 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 5 ds, 3 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, rw. Repeat from * 3 times. R of 4 ds, join in same long p of r, 4 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 5 ds, rw. R of 3 ds, p, 3 ds, rw. Ch 5 ds, join in same p where upper wing began. Tie and cut threads.
Lower Wing: Join in p of lower body, ch 5 ds, rw. R of 3 ds, long p, 3 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 5 ds, join in p of last small r of upper wing, 5 ds, 2 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, rw. (R of 3 ds, join in long p of r, 3 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 5 ds, 3 p sep by 5 ds, 5 ds, rw) twice, r of 3 ds, join in same long p, 3 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 5 ds, join in same p where lower wing began. Tie and cut threads.
Outer Edge Around Wings: Join where upper wing joins body, ch 2 ds, 2 p sep by 2 ds, 2 ds, join in center p of next ch of upper wing (next free p). (Ch 2 ds, 6 p sep by 2 ds, 2 ds, join in center p of next ch) 4 times. Ch 1 ds, join in next center p of lower wing. (Ch 2 ds, 6 p sep by 2 ds, join in next center p of lower wing) twice. Ch 2 ds, 6 p sep by 2 ds, join in same p where lower wing began. Tie and cut threads. Repeat upper and lower wing directions on other side of body.
Antennae: R of 6 ds, cl r, rw. Ch 26 ds, join in second p of head, ch 1 ds, join in next p of head, ch 26 ds, rw. R of 6 ds, cl r, rw. Tie and cut threads.
Shape and press under damp cloth. Spray starch will help to retain shape.
